Mt Pleasant, also known as "East to the Cooper", is north of the Charleston peninsula. This area has grown dramatically in the last 10 years and has some of the newest shopping and best restaurants in the area. Mount Pleasant has easy access to downtown Charleston and to the beaches of Sullivans Island and the Isle of Palms.
Just on the other side of the Cooper River from Charleston, Mt Pleasant is a favorite spot for great seafood, upscale shopping and quality neighborhoods that retain a bit of grace and southern charm.
Home prices in this area tend to be higher than the local
average although not out of reach for many home buyers. In choosing the Mount Pleasant area, many home buyers carefully balance the trade-off between square footage and location as they frequently compare Mount Pleasant to other similar communities such as Summerville.
Mount Pleasant has some of the most ambitious growth projections and some of the newest construction. Recent additions to the area include a new shopping area, Oakland Plaze, on Hwy 17 just above Highway 41 and a new state-of-the-art St Francis Hospital. The high school serving the area, Wando High School, is one of the largest high schools in the state of South Carolina and has some of the highest number of academic and athletic accolades.
One of the advantages many people cite for live in the Mount Pleasant area is that it has great boating access to
the Charleston Harbor. There are both public and private boat landings available that enable recreational boaters quick access to excellent fishing and premier skiing and sailing opportunities.
Driving through the Old Village of Mt Pleasant give you a sense that of history of the area. The Old Village was first established as a bedroom community for wealthy Charlestonians and as a plantation. The original Mount Pleasant Plantation house still stands and is a private residence today . During the Revolutionary War, General Cornwallis headquartered in the original Mount Pleasant plantation house during a British occupation of Charleston.

Old Mount Pleasant has some interesting features including: Alhambra Hall, the venue for many wedding receptions each year and for the annual blessing of the local shrimping fleet; the old Pitt street bridge park - a great place to walk and enjoy the marsh views and views of the Charleston Harbor or to cast your fishing line; and, seemingly endless beautiful antebellum homes and grand oaks.
One of the most popular areas in Mt Pleasant for most visitors is Shem Creek. Along Shem Creek, numerous restaurants offer incredible seafood delights. If you like to kayak or if you would like to try your hand and catching a blue Marlin, on Shem Creek you can charter a Hatteras or jump into a rental kayak - or even bring your own. Walking along the docks of Shem Creek you just might see a bottlenose dolphin or two or if you are exceptionallylucky, a manatee could stop by to pay you a visit. But
Some of the best shopping in the Charleston area happens in Mt Pleasant. The focal point of shopping for the Mount Pleasant area is the Mount Pleasant Town Center Mall. There you'll find a variety of national brand stores as well as local ventures. Town Center also features one of the best area movie theaters - the Palmetto Grand.
If you enjoy quality parks, you will enjoy the parks in Mt Pleasant. The most recent addition is the Mt Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park located adjacent to the base of the Ravenel Bridge. This park memorializes members of the military from mount pleasant. It includes the area's best pier that extends over 1000 feet into the Cooper River. Although many people do fish from this location, the pier was designed principally as an entertainm
ent venue.
