Located directly across the Ashley River from historic Charleston, West Ashley is in a perfect location for those who love downtown and want fast access to the great area beaches or to the Charleston Harbor. Much of the the area is picturesque, surrounded by beautiful marshes of the Ashley River and the Stono River - with views of downtown Charleston and the Charleston Harbor. Many of the neighborhoods have salt water access. West Ashley is one of the larger defined geographic areas of the Charleston region and one of the most populated parts of the greater Charleston area. West Ashley residents often comment that the area has a true, "small town feel".

With a population of about 60,000 people, West Ashley is actually a part of the City of Charleston. Many of the areas of West Ashley were developed in the 50s and 60s - especially those areas close to downtown Charleston. Because of its proximity to the downtown area and to the area's huge medical complex, the older neighborhoods near downtown are very popular. (In addition to its proximity to the downtown medical complex, West Ashley is also home to Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital).
The history of West Ashley is the history of Charleston. In fact, in 1670 Charleston was originally established along the banks of the Ashley River in West Ashley - in what is now the Charles Towne Landing State Park.
Even Summerville can be reached from West Ashley via Highway 61 in less than 30 minutes. This is a great area.
